As many of you may already know, a few months ago, the Config 2024<\/strong>the annual conference of Figma<\/strong>. This event, eagerly awaited by thousands of designers, is not only an opportunity to discover what's new in software<\/strong>but also a meeting point for the community<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, there were no shortage of surprises.,<\/strong> from interface changes<\/strong> of the programme, passing through new tools<\/strong> that promise to make our work easier (although not without some minor inconvenience) or the incorporation of a functionality with artificial intelligence.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this update<\/strong> already installed and after a adaptation period,<\/strong> we can analyse their main novelties,<\/strong> reflecting on how they impact on the way we design. There is a lot to explore, so let's take it one step at a time. We can summarise the changes in 5 sections:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Interface makeover: UI3 arrives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the most noticeable changes has been the new interface, known as the UI3<\/strong>. Although is not a total revolution,<\/strong> any change in appearance <\/strong>of such a widely used tool has an immediate impact<\/strong>is what \"jumps out\" the most when you come back to the programme. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new UI3<\/strong> takes inspiration from other tools such as Spline, Framer or Mir\u00f3<\/strong>by betting on a more minimalist and modern design, removes shortcuts to several primary tools and adds a toolbar on the bottom centre axis.<\/strong> In the following, we will briefly discuss the pros and cons<\/strong> that this a priori change entails:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advantages:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
    \n
  • Cleaner aesthetics <\/strong>and up to date, which makes working with Figma<\/strong> remain visually attractive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Reorganisation that favours the visual hierarchy: <\/strong>Now, all the document actions and options are more accessible,<\/strong> although you may need some time to get used to the new layout.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Text editing and typography:<\/strong> Text editing is now called typography, and the fields are much clearer and easier to handle. This change, though small, significantly improves usability.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Disadvantages:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
      \n
    • Learning curve:<\/strong> To more experienced designers,<\/strong> it's a matter of getting used to it again and explore the programme again;<\/strong> It will take a while but it's no drama. It remains to be seen how new users will adapt<\/strong> of the programme to this interface.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Some functions that were previously at hand, such as the constraints<\/strong>the autolayout<\/strong> or the creation of components,<\/strong> are now more hidden,<\/strong> requiring more clicks to access them. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Generally speaking, the vast majority of people find it hard to change.<\/strong> But we need to be aware of the constant evolutions<\/strong> of the world we live in, where everything can be turned upside down in the blink of an eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      As a creative people embedded in the digital world,<\/strong> We need to be aware of the latter, and lose the fear of recycling, continually learn<\/strong> and be a constant sponge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

       Although the start-up seems less intuitive,<\/strong> many users have discovered new ways of working with tools<\/strong> that previously went unnoticed. Patience, designers: in the end, this interface has potential.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

      2. AI for Design, between comings and goings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      The artificial intelligence<\/strong> came with strength and high expectations, but, as is often the case with technological promises,<\/strong> his debut was not as spectacular as we had imagined. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The Generative AI prototyping<\/strong>which was advertised as a revolutionary tool,<\/strong> offered results that are too generic <\/strong>in its earliest versions, which led to its temporary withdrawal.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      However, the IA<\/strong> has recently returned with significant improvements. Its current capabilities range from beyond basic prototyping,<\/strong> including useful functions such as the elimination of funds<\/strong> in pictures, the reorganisation of layers<\/strong> or even advanced prompts management. At its reappearance, we can say that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      What it does well:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
        \n
      • App prototyping:<\/strong> It is now able to generate more useful structures,<\/strong> serving as a basis for designers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Repetitive tasks:<\/strong> It saves us time removing backgrounds from images,<\/strong> reorganising elements<\/strong> untidy or modifying texts <\/strong>without having to resort to lorem ipsum, giving variety and an extra point of veracity to our designs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        What needs to be improved:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

        Web design remains a weak point.<\/strong> Although the IA<\/strong> generates functional structures, often lack the level of personalisation <\/strong>users expect. Even so, it can be a good tool <\/strong>for those days when you need to unlock your creativity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        For the time being, the AI <\/strong>will not replace the designers (one more day with work), but it can become a great ally to speed up workflows.<\/strong> Use it judiciously and remember that, in the end, creativity is still our best tool, and there is no substitute for that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        What is clear is that the designer's judgement remains key<\/strong> in this time of Generative AI,<\/strong> where our critical eye is the only filter<\/strong> to successfully complete any type of design we are working on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

        3. Figma Slides: Integrated presentations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        The launch of Figma Slides<\/strong> marks an ambitious attempt to Figma<\/strong> to cover more aspects of creative work. This tool, designed to create presentations<\/strong> within the same ecosystem,<\/strong> promises to unify design and exhibition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

        In theory, it sounds ideal: to have all in one place<\/strong> without recourse to PowerPoint or Google Slides. <\/strong>But like any new product, it comes with small print in the package leaflet, and before you jump into its arms, bear in mind the following points:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Pros:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
          \n
        • Seamless integration <\/strong>with other Figma projects, thus maintaining visual consistency, improving workflow and allowing cohesion between all phases of the project.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • It is currently free of charge,<\/strong> while you are in your Beta version.<\/strong> But this, as we shall see below, is a double-edged sword<\/strong>...<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          Cons:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
            \n
          • As of 2025<\/strong> will be a tool payment,<\/strong> which could deter those who already use other programmes at zero cost.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • Technical limitations:<\/strong> when exporting PDFs<\/strong>, does not allow page selection <\/strong>specific, and if you want to export bypassing some slide, you'll have to copy and paste<\/strong> in another document.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • Presents problems with video embedding<\/strong>such as on Youtube,<\/strong> and there are certain fallos in reproduction<\/strong> of these.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

            It seems that Figma Slides has potential<\/strong>but still certain details need to be polished<\/strong>. For now, it's useful if you're looking for simplicity and consistency in your presentations, but if you rely on more advanced features, it may not be the ultimate replacement. Y if you are one of those who find it hard to make ends meet <\/strong>in programmes, don't get too infatuated...<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

            4. UI Kits: New resources, but at what price?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

            In this update, Figma<\/strong> has introduced new UI kits<\/strong>as iOS 18<\/strong> for Apple<\/strong>, Material Design 3<\/strong> for Android<\/strong>and a Figma's own design system, <\/strong>albeit somewhat simple. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            These resources facilitate the design<\/strong> for specific platforms, saving time <\/strong>in standard projects and helping us to standardise our designs<\/strong> on the basis of the platform standards<\/strong> for which we are working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            The main problem<\/strong> that you can have is that these kits automatically appear in all projects,<\/strong> This can be annoying for those who prefer to work with their own systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            While they are useful, their default integration can saturate the assets panel or the styles, <\/strong>complicating the search for customised elements or loading the interface unnecessarily, <\/strong>and above all, without having given us a choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            If you like to work with your own or third-party kits, there is an option to remove them from the <\/strong>and display only the ones you want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

            5. FigJam and Dev Mode: Incremental Improvements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

            FigJam<\/strong>the collaborative canvas of Figma<\/strong>continues to grow. The possibility of working with multiple pages<\/strong> improves the organisation in workshops and brainstorming, making it a an even more comprehensive tool for work between creative teams.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            As for the Dev Mode<\/strong>designed to facilitate the transition between design and development,<\/strong> has received improvements that make it more intuitive for developers<\/strong>who have more clarity and instructions<\/strong> to know what can already be created, the changes that have been made <\/strong>in a file and the way in which they should develop it<\/strong>. Now, accessing specifications and resources is easier<\/strong> than ever before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Conclusion: A year of significant change with both light and shadows<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

            The update of Figma in 2024<\/strong> has brought with it interesting developments and challenges that remain to be solved.<\/strong> From the new UI3<\/strong> until improvements in AI, Figma Slides and FigJam, <\/strong>this year has forced us to rethink the way we work<\/strong> and explore new possibilities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            And remember, our day by day is full of changes, and the world of design <\/strong>is at the forefront of this. Fortunately or unfortunately, our profession demands and requires us to constantly renew ourselves as professionals.<\/strong>and I particularly love it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Finally, we cannot forget Config 2024<\/strong>an event that not only presented technical innovations, <\/strong>but also stood out for its vibrant atmosphere.<\/strong> More than a conference, it looked like a music festival:<\/strong> lights, applause and excited people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            If the 2025 edition follows this line,<\/strong> it may be time to start saving and live the experience<\/strong> in person.
